During the Paleolithic and Neolithic time periods in prehistory, man and woman played close to equal roles in the society. There were many factors leading to the rise in the patriarchal society, but access to food was one of the main reasons. During the Paleolithic and Neolithic times, both man and woman had to work to get food for their families in separate, but equally as important ways. Since the invention of the plow, most the world’s civilizations have been patriarchal societies. Before the plow was invented, man and woman had close to equal roles in the family and community life. Once the agricultural revolution began, the typical patriarchal society began, and became the norm for every great civilization. During the Stone Age, as described by Natalie Angier, there was evidence of stone statuettes of much defined women, as if the creators of the statuettes worshipped women. With very big breasts, thighs, and stomachs, the creators showed that their idea of beauty w as a woman that was fertile (Reilly, 7).
